Lakeside Swim Club
Lakeside Swim Club is a prestigious pool in the center of the Highlands neighborhood in Louisville, KY. It is known for being massive, and is regarded as one of (is not the) best pools for the state or even farther. It is fairly exclusive, and membership is hard to attain as it is done through a process where the "sponsors" (people who live in homes that are in a certain vicinity from the pool) are allowed to give one family membership each year. In order to get a membership you must apply to be on a list or know a sponsor personally. The Highlands is a wealthy neighborhood and is very exclusive itself; the majority of the population is white. Because of this, nearly all of the members at this pool are white. I myself am a member, and seeing a person of color at Lakeside is not something that occurs on a regular basis.
I find this to be an example of unofficial segregation. Of course there are no rules against people of color being members, but because it is so highly sought and such a good reputation, the fact that the majority of the members are white comes of as unsavory.
