The Pendennis Club
A direct example of the continued notion of white supremacy in Louisville, KY.
The Pendennis Club opened in 1928 as an elite social club where litigators and business men would meet to discuss politics, their recent money-making events, and anything else going on in their lives over food and drink. The building itself was built to make the members feel at home, and anyone who has been inside can contest to its grandness. No expense was spared in the construction of the mansion-like clubhouse.
Naturally when the club opened its members were all, no doubt, white. This is no surprise, considering the segregation that resided in Louisville at the time. Outside of the club, Louisville, along with much of the country, began the transition into racial equality while to Pendennis remained more or less the same regarding the races of their members.
My grandfathers have been members, and they have both said that the majority of their members are white. Though there are no actual rules about members being anything but white, it is clear by their population it is encouraged though the qualifications of becoming a member.
I find this to be an example of white supremacy in a simple and often overlooked form. Because the club prides itself on being on of the most respectable social organizations and the members are know for being very well of, the fact that most members are white highlights how minorities are often not as fortunate as white people.
